Digital Photography

Course Description: Beginning students will be introduced to basic technical aspects of photography and will then apply these skills to an exciting project of storytelling. Each student will work on developing a collection of images that will be published in their own personal photo book. Art photography and photo essay will be the main focus of this workshop as students learn about and explore image creation. Students will learn a few publishing skills as they edit, design and publish their work in a 20 page softcover book.

7-Week Schedule

Week 1:
In this class you will learn the fundamental principles of photography. F/Stops, shutter speeds and ISO's will be discussed while exploring your own digital cameras. Art photography and photographic essay storytelling as a form of expression will be discussed, as well as the photo book project.

Week 2:
This week will focus on story telling techniques, exploring personal interests and capturing first images with your camera. Images must be saved on each week before leaving.

Week 3:
Examples of visual storytelling will be shown in class as well as examples of art photography. Continue capturing images and working on your personal photo essay.

Week 4:
The class will look at a few examples of successful photographers and discuss their story telling and photo essay work. Students will present their work and continue photographing and building upon their visual stories. Don't forget to work on the text you want to include in your photo book – this might be a short autobiography, profile and or preface.

Week 5:
One more week to go! We will discuss principles of publishing both online and print. Start to put together your photo books, if you need more images get out there and shoot.

Week 6:
Photographic Storytelling- Putting it all together. All images and text must be completed and compiled together in your final photo book layout so it can be sent off for printing.

Week 7: Saturday Studio Art Show & Parents' Reception
The class will discuss what was learned and review. This will be followed by a book showcase and celebration with family and friends.
